Founded in the 8th century as a hostel and chapel for Anglo-Saxon pilgrims, Santo Spirito in Sassia survived fire, raids, and the 1527 Sack of Rome before being rebuilt in the mid-16th century. Pope St. John Paul II made it a Cardinal-Deaconry in 1991 and designated it the official Sanctuary of Divine Mercy in 1994, following the visions of St. Faustina Kowalska.

On the 5th of each month, the evening Mass shifts to 5:00 p.m. for the Solemn Mass of Divine Mercy. Daily devotions: 3:00 p.m. Hour of Divine Mercy/Chaplet; 5:30 p.m. Eucharistic Adoration; 6:00 p.m. Rosary. The Sunday 9:00 a.m. Mass is celebrated in English and is officially published as such on the church’s own site (divinamisericordia.it)
