Santa Maria in Traspontina was built after Pope Pius IV had its predecessor church demolished to clear cannon lines of fire from the nearby Castel Sant’Angelo — reportedly the only church in Rome whose dome, for the same reason, does not sit on a drum. In 2019 it drew national attention when statues from an Amazon Synod exhibit were removed from the church and thrown into the Tiber.
