Founded in 1519 out of a mutual-aid society for Sienese people living in Rome, Santa Caterina da Siena still displays flags representing each of Siena’s seventeen contrade. The present church dates to a rebuilding campaign of 1766–1775 by the architect Paolo Posi, undertaken after Tiber flood damage.
