San Lorenzo fuori le Mura is built from two medieval basilicas joined end to end, which is why its high altar sits mid-nave rather than at the apse. One of only two Roman churches damaged in WWII bombing, it stands beside the Campo Verano cemetery, above the catacomb where St. Lawrence himself is said to be buried, and is one of the Seven Pilgrim Churches.
